I should have met Margaret in the late '60s when we were both on an international exchange to Queens Borough Public Library, New York, but it is a big borough and we did not actually meet until about 1974 when we worked in the same library at the BBC. When we talked about New York, we realised we had both worked with one of our favourite colleagues and I think we both appreciated the generous opportunity to live and work in the USA. America was still top dog - in spite of assassinations (both Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther KIng), riots in Chicago, the Vietnam draft.... A quite different occasion was the moon landing when the libraries closed for a day and we all got a holiday to celebrate!
Then we were geographically separated again, but Margaret, as well as acquiring her own family and always busy, still offered hospitality to far-flung friends. It was typical of her to put a few well chosen books at my bedside when I stayed with her and Andy in Trowbridge. It was also such a pleasure to meet up with her and Charlotte and other friends in London - cheerful talk about travel and the theatre never stopped and she lifted our spirits whenever we met!
